My personal journey so far has been varied and interesting. Along the way I have learned a great deal and developed my own insights into the human condition, its meaning and what is meant by success. I am happy to share these with you, for you to do with them as you will.
Who am I?
My successes and challenges
My offer to you
My early years were spent in south-east London. My parents divorced when I was seven and a few years later my mother remarried. Together she and my new father fostered other children. I did well at school and was active in Scouting and the local church. I was very ambitious and chased achievement and recognition. These driving forces have matured – after many achievements and much recognition – into a wish to make a difference and have a positive impact on others’ lives, to leave something behind. This site is part of that legacy.
At the age of seventeen I left home to study teaching and youth work and ended up with a degree in psychology and education. In the first ten years of my working life I moved from child care to medical research (in hearing and psycho-acoustics) to IT management to heading the training function for a domestic airline. A pretty diverse career path. Like many people I was looking for my way forward. I was not unsuccessful but I hadn’t quite found my passion, the direction I wanted to go and the path I wanted to follow.
Towards the end of my twenties I met and then married Diane. We have been very happy together for over thirty years and have a wonderful daughter, Caroline, who is a graduate in psychology and law and plans – has always planned – to go into law. We are like most families; we have had our ups and downs but we have always faced life’s challenges together. Diane and I are deeply proud of our caring, principled, funny, attractive, independent, hard-working daughter.
In my early work, whether paid or voluntary, I learned about working with people, leading and influencing them, being in teams and being a manager within public and private organisations. In my early thirties I moved to a large management consultancy and learnt to work with multiple organisations with different cultures and values, all at the same time.
What I really learnt was the core truths that lead to some people succeeding while others do not. I also learnt how some organisations are also successful, and a joy to work with, while others always seem to be in difficulty.
Twenty-five years ago I set up my own consultancy practice, working as a coach and trainer specialising in leadership and management, a facilitator of senior management teams in their quest to build strategies for the future, and a consultant developing solutions to diverse challenges. I have worked with some of the best known organisations in the private, public and not for profit sectors, as well as with small to medium enterprises and owner managed companies. While spending most of my time in the UK, my work does take me overseas where I have developed and run programmes for multi-cultural groups in global organisations.
I have had a lot of fun and met some great people.
My purpose and passion in life is to improve not just myself but to help others to succeed and be the best they can be.
